Sidney Z. Lucas

Sidney Z. Lucas was an art entrepreneur who was responsible for a large number of prints which generate many questions to our shop as well as on various antique forums on the internet. Lucas' prints are those either issued by “Camilla Lucas” or the “Paris Etching Society.” His prints can also be identified by a circular or triangular symbol with the initials “SZL.” Some of the details are uncertain, but the general story of Lucas and his prints is as follows. [Addition Jan. 2010: Lucille Lucas, daughter of Sidney Lucas, has left a comment to this blog correcting some apparent errors in this blog and adding some extra information. Please make sure to read this comment...]

Beginning in the 1920s and lasting until the 1960s, Sidney Lucas owed The Old Print Center in New York and ran a gallery named the Camilla Lucas Gallery, named after his mother. He was in the business of both wholesale art publishing and retail art sales, dealing with modern and contemporary prints as well as reproductions of prints.

As another venture, Lucas formed the Paris Etching Society, where he traveled to Europe and commissioned prints by primarily French and Flemish artists. These were all original, hand-colored aquatints or etchings and they were usually signed, and sometimes titled, in pencil by the artists. Supposedly the runs for these prints were between 350 and 500. These prints can be identified either by a “Paris Etching Society” imprint or the initials “SZL” inside a triangle or circle.

These prints were sold out of Lucas’ gallery in New York, as well as galleries around the country. Most of the artists who produced prints for Lucas are of no particular note and indeed it is often impossible to read the signatures, or even if they are legible, to find out much about the artists. The prints typically have a “soft” feel to them and are colored with pastel shades. The fact that the artists are not of the first rank, that the prints were run off in fairly large runs, and that there are lots and lots of these prints floating around means that they have only “decorative” value. They are attractive, original prints, but generally not collector prints.

  1. I inherited a collection of Syndey Lucas framed gold prints, which depict the months of the year- I have all 12. Does anyone have an idea what these might be worth?

  2. Generally the Lucas prints, of any sort, have "decorative" value. This means that you could sell them for whatever someone would pay to hang something that looks like they do in his/her home. How much that would be depends on what the items look like, considering factors such as decorative appeal, color, size, condition, frame, and so forth. This value varies by location, but you can get an idea by visiting local flea markets or auctions and compare your set to what you see. They have no particular "collectors" value, but this doesn't mean they don't have reasonable value. However, it is their appearance/appeal that determines their value, not their history.

  3. I have an original etching of a tiger. Sticker on back says genuine etching, Paris etching society. Lower left hand corner it has 1958 Syndey Lucas. It is signed by the artist C. Ciyria or something like that. Do you have any more info on this ? Would probably sell it in the future. It is framed with a bamboo look. Would appreciated hearing from you. Jan

  4. I have a a Sidney Z Lucas print of "THE AMERICAN NATIONAL GAME of BASEBALL". I cannot find an artist's name anywhere on the print. It is 18" X 24" and is hermedically sealed in a frame that has UV glass (the frame cost $250.00). It was engraved in aquatint and contains all the Lucas markings. Is there anyway to determine its value?
    Thank you,

  5. I was lucky enough to find a framed print of a Gordon Setter by Paul Wood at an antique store. It shows litho in USA, and has SZL in circle under Paul Wood signature. It has Paul Wood "Flying Away" printed at bottom and shows No. B-183. I found Paul Wood Artist on Internet and this print is titled as "En Pointe." What is the difference and can you tell how old this is?

  11. Lots of questions about Lucas prints and value. Most of Lucas' prints were by artists who are not considered important today or are reproductions (like those after Currier & Ives or Gould prints). All of these prints have only "decorative" value. Basically, then, you can assume any Sidney Z. Lucas or Paris Etching Society print has "decorative" value. Of course, decorative prints can sell for a reasonable amount (cf. post on these prints), but they will not have any real collector's value.

  13. My name is Lucille Lucas, the daughter of Sidney Lucas. Your information about my father is not quite correct and there are some omissions such as his being the first North American publisher of original Salvador Dali lithographs. He also published many other artists including Redoute, Prevost and Barraband, Vlaminck and Utrillo which are all very crisp, clear and beautiful images. My mother Phyllis Lucas started The Old Print Center in the 1950's long after Sidney had his wholesale business in full swing. I am not aware of a gallery named after his sister Camilla but he did use that name in his publications. My mother's gallery did not close in the 1960's. Phyllis Lucas ran her gallery until the day she died and then her children kept it open. As a matter of fact I have moved the inventory to Colorado under the name Lucille Lucas Gallery. My mother's gallery was The Old Print Center Phyllis Lucas Gallery. For more information please refer to my web site lucillelucasgallery.com We do not do appraisals for free so please do not request information about my fathers publications. Everyone is welcome to read our history and look over our inventory. We get a lot of requests and simply do not have the staff to work on our web site and reply to so many questions.
Mr. Lane I would appreciate your making some corrections to your commentary. I welcome your correspondence with me if you are inclined.

  15. I have a a print by Paul Wood that has #56 a circle with a R in it, a circle with SLZ, and i believe its title the Departure only in french. Its about 3' x 2'. Iam thinking of selling it on ebay but not sure what kind of reserve to put on it. Its in good condition, it has a few light spots. Where might i find out what kind of reserve to ask for?

    ReplyDelete
  16. From our experience these prints sell for "decorative" print values and so basically it doesn't make sense to put a reserve on the print above the minimum you would be willing to accept for it. Let the auction decide. If you are really worried about it, then I would simply check out ebay for sales of other prints by Paul Wood (I think they come up from time to time) and then you will be able to get a better idea of what it might go for. Good luck.

  17. I've got seven prints by the artist E.A.Seguy with the Sidney Lucas copywrite. I've read where you say most were for 'decorative' purposes, however, I've found quite a few other reprints by the same artist auctioning for more than a few dollars. Could the prints I have be worth more than 'decorative'?

    ReplyDelete
  18. No. As reproductions of the originals, these have "only" "decorative" value. In terms of what the prints have gone for at auction, that can have a number of factors. One is that there could just have been two people who wanted the same thing and they didn't know or care what was the "right" price. Another is that the people buying might not have realized that the prints were reproductions. Finally, there is the issue of what "decorative value" means.

"Decorative value" means that you can sell the item for whatever someone would pay in order to hang something that looks like it does on his/her wall. How much that would be depends on what the item looks like, considering factors such as decorative appeal, color, size, condition, frame, and so forth. If you have a really nice print in a nice frame, its decorative value can be substantial even though it is a reproduction. If you go to any mall in the country, you will see modern reproductive prints in frames selling for a lot. This is "only" "decorative" value, but it can be substantial. So your prints might be worth a reasonable amount, but still have only decorative value.

I have a set of five Sidney Lucas prints (with his copyright signature and the registered SZL in a circle). The prints are of very old carriages, most of them driven from the rear and all with a large wheel in back and a smaller wheel in front.

Having read your remarks about his prints being decorative, I wanted to ask, since this is a set of five, would there be any additional value?

in 1930's. He had a company named Camilla Lucas and The Old Print Shop/Center.
One of her/his paintings sold on EbayUK for 57,000.00.

  52. Chris, Are there tell tale 'give aways' on Lucas's reprints of Gould's work? I have an interest in purchasing a 'too good to be true' scenario I feel. A Gould print for several hundred dollars that if it is 'original' someone much more knowledgeable than me would have snapped it up with a view to reselling it in the right market. Knowing the value of originals the seller, an antique map and print dealer could have subtantially increased his return by doing it himself. My next step is to view the originals which are held in one or two universities here. I have made lots of enqiries to try to authenticate the print and while those in the know infer the difference between an original ( which to me is both the image and the paper it is on dating to 1840-50) and a facsimile is like knowing the difference between it is raining and it is not, I need to see 'originals.'

  53. The Lucas copies (they are not reprints, but reproductinos) of Gould actually have his name on them, as well as the circle with the initials "SZL" However, there are lots of Gould reproductions that do not have this information. In then end, the way you tell an original Gould from a reproduction is i) the paper (which you get to know by handling a lot of originals and ii) the process. The reproductions are not hand colored lithographs but are made by some other sort of process. If you read other posts in this blog or go to the Philadelphia Print Shop on-line reference library, you can read about some of the ways to tell a reproduction from an original.

You can try visiting a library with a good art department and seeing if they have any of the artist dictionaries to see if you can find something, but do not be surprised if you cannot. They often hired artists who had some skill, but not enough to make a name for themselves.

    1. We recommend all restoration be done by a professional paper conservator. There are lots of "home remedies," but these all risk doing more harm than good to the prints, especially in the long run.

I have 3 8" x 10" prints (cute dogs & cats) with the symbol of sLz in a circle. They have been in my possession since the late 1930's. They are not framed now, but are in excellent condition. I am looking for both present value and any other info that you could possibly provide me

    2. I have four "Gusty" pastel etchings. They are labeled with the SZL label . It also states that "Etchings carrying this label are Genuine Original French Etchings Imported from Paris. The Artist placed on this Etching the Triangle Trade Mark enclosing the letters SZL as a Special identification. An Etching is only Genuine Original when made entirely by hand, and no mechanical process is used"

The four are named "The Farm Path", "Along the Quay", " Gothique Bridge" and the fourth has lost the label and just says "scene". They were purchased in 1938 by my parents which is marked in my mother's handwriting on the back of each picture. The "scene" without the label does have typed information which has J30704 and a second number 7336. Just thought I would let someone know that I also have the "Gusty" artist and according to the label are "Originals" and not reproduced. Thank You. Judy B

  73. I have three prints and each has the SZL inside a circle on the left lower corner next to a copyright symbol. Two of the prints are dog soccer art, or in Europe football. One is titled "How shocking!...an illiterate." It looks like the last name of the artist is Klein and from googling other information I have found the artist is Boris O'Klein a French artist and cartoonist who known for numerous prints and watercolors of dogs getting up to mischief. Prints are generally called "The Naughty Dogs" or "The Dirty Dogs", or "The Dirty Dogs of Paris." How much are these worth? They are in very good condition.

  74. Greetings, A very interesting website on Sydney Z Lucas. And for his daughter to post a comment makes it fascinating...anyway, I have 2 colored etchings which will be up on ebay 12/14/13 6pm PST. Both appear original, signed by Sydney and with the SZL logo, neither have numbers so could they be original? I'm sure there's a lot of art experts viewing ebay and no doubt the closing price will tell all....Best regards, Denny

My parents received this as a wedding gift , and I love it, but I started to relocate it in my house and was curious. Thanks

  77. Fascinating conversation about the Sidney Z. Lucas prints and thought it was absolutely great that his daughter took the time to write in. I, too, had been doing research on SZL prints. However, the real reason I am writing today, is...I am also doing research on what I will call a "competitor" of Mr. Lucas, one Rudolf Lesch of Fifth Avenue in New York City whose Monogram, also on the bottom left-hand side of his prints, is a backward "R" and an L. These also have a number just like the Lucas prints do. So, Chris Lane, or anyone else, are you familiar with the works of Rudolf Lesch which appeared from approximately 1940 through the 1970's? You all may be interested in knowing that, after exhaustive research, I have finally determined that the artist whose work I own, published by Rudolf Lesch in 1940, is the same, exact artist who worked for Sidney Z. Lucas in the 1930's, but, under a different name! Evidently, they both employed the work of artists who were French, Belgian and Dutch.
Love this blog! Hope to hear from any of you in regard to Rudolf Lesch and his prints. Thanks! ep@bloomington.in.us

  78. Mr. Lane, are you aware if Mr Lucas ever produced any prints of P.J. Redoute's "Les Roses" series. My boss and I have acquired two of the "Les Roses" prints which appear to be period-appropriate. they are definitely not dot matrix and appear to be etching/pressings which I know the originals were as Redoute carved and then hand-colored the plates. The reason I ask is towards the bottom of the rose stem on both prints are the initials S.Z.L. going vertically down the stem---no triangle, no circle. Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated. My email is eddie.weathers735@gmail.com

  79. Sir,

I have a question in regards to an aquatint I just purchased. It is a piece entitled "Port in the Moonlight" and signed in pencil by listed French painter Maurice Menardeau.

I am a little confused as to reproductions and originals. The piece that I have is definitely an aquatint that bears the "SZL" marking in the LR corner along with a pencil marked "32" (possibly the edition number?). In the LL corner is the artist's name, Maurice Menardeau, clearly signed in pencil. On the back is the original SZL tag with the title of the work.

In your initial paragraphs you stated that Lucas was known for commissioning French and Flemish artists through the Paris Etching Society. Could this be one of those pieces and would it be considered an original and not a reproduction? If so does is still get categorized under decorative art?

Newer to art collecting and would appreciate any feedback that you could provide. Thanks and have e nice day

    1. Many of Lucas' publications are original prints, especially those signed like yours. However, Menardeau is not an artist whose work is really "collectible," so while your print is an original, it is still one which--in terms of value--is "decorative."

    1. No, I do not say they have "no value." I say they do not have collectors value. They all have "decorative value." Now I do not know SZL's output well enough to say that none of their prints have collectors value, so it is possible, but I have never seen nor heard of any.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If the prints are originals, and if they can be removed from the shade, then they would have "some" value, but they would not be pristine (because of their history) and that cost of that would probably be more than the prints would be worth. The best thing to do is simply enjoy the lamp for its appearance. The prints do not, I think, add any real value.

  100. Does a print in its original frame/mat have more value than one that has been reframed? I inherited 2 of them in the original pencil line mat and frame, and two I bought in the flea market that have obviously been reframed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There is no straight forward answer to that question. If the original frame is nice, then it will add value, but lots of old frames are not that nice and so really do not. Also, if in the original frame, the matting is probably "bad" (in the sense of being very acidic) and that hurts the value relative to a reframing which is done with acid-free matting, etc.

    1. The number on this print is not the number of the impression (e.g. number 117 out of 200), but the number of the image in the society's catalogue. Thus every example of this print will have the same signature, number and title.

  116. The topic of SLZ-stamped or "Copyright Camille Lucas" must be pretty well exhausted by now, but I have a different take on it. My print is like all the others, but with the SLZ in a triangle instead of a circle. Also, more important, is that it is signed in pencil with the title " Apres L'Ondee and a signature of Pau Feelaud (?). The difference is that the print is actually entitled La Route en Automne" and the artist is Henri Jourdain. There are exact prints sold at auction, with the same SLZ and copyright 1936 with the proper title and signature in pencil. Jourdain died in 1931 and the image was printed and copyrighted in 1937, so the pencilled signature is not valid whether it is Jourdain or the incorrectly titled one I have. So t his is a differnt situation than the obscure artists whose work was printed, copyrighted, and sold in the US. This was the work of a known artist whose work was printed and copyrighted posthumously, then given a fictitious title and artist signature on that print. There is either a trace of pencil or some discoloring along the border of the print, below the SLZ triangle mark, which may have been a vestige of the original title and signature which was printed then undersigned with the fake name.SO I think I have a fake of a fake. I paid $80 and the print is beautiful, and the "real" ones stamped SLZ, correctly titled and "signed?" by Henri Jourdain sell for a few dollars more.
